Recommended for systems that have already undergone a chemical wash but are still not performing as well as before.

1. Preparation

  • Service Port: Locate the suction line service Port on the outdoor unit. These valves are typically covered by protective caps and have thread size of 5/16” or R410A or R32.
  • Manifold Gauge Connection: Attach the manifold gauge set to the service suction line service port. The blue hose connects to the service port and the yellow hose will be used for vacuuming and charging refrigerant.

2. Accessing the System

  • Service Port: Locate the suction line service Port on the outdoor unit. These valves are typically covered by protective caps and have thread size of 5/16” or R410A or R32.
  • Manifold Gauge Connection: Attach the manifold gauge set to the service suction line service port. The blue hose connects to the service port and the yellow hose will be used for vacuuming and charging refrigerant.

3. Evacuating the Old Refrigerant

    • Ensure System is Empty: Check the manifold gauge to ensure all refrigerant has been evacuated and the system pressure is at 0 psi. 4. Vacuuming the System
    • Vacuum Pump Connection: Disconnect the yellow hose from the recovery machine and connect it to the vacuum pump.
    • Initiating the Vacuum: Activate the vacuum pump to begin the evacuation process. The vacuum will remove any remaining refrigerant, moisture, and air from the system.
    • Duration: Maintain the vacuum for 15-30 minutes to ensure complete removal of contaminants. Check the manifold gauge; a proper vacuum is typically indicated by a pressure reading of 30 psi or lower. Starting from May 2024, a micron gauge will be added to the vacuuming process to ensure obtaining a value of 500 microns or lower.

4. Checking for Leaks

  • Hold the Vacuum: After the vacuum process is complete, turn off the vacuum pump and observe the pressure reading on the gauge for a few minutes. If the pressure remains stable, the system is likely free of leaks. If the pressure increases, it indicates a leak that must be located and repaired before proceeding.

5. Charging with New Refrigerant

  • Calculating Refrigerant Quantity: Determine the factory-specified refrigerant charge for the system, typically noted on the data plate of the outdoor unit. Adjust for the length of the piping as necessary, using guidelines found in the manufacturer’s installation manual. Below is the example for LG R410A multi split.

  • Refrigerant Cylinder Preparation: Place the refrigerant cylinder on the scales and connect the yellow hose to the cylinder. Open the cylinder valve slightly to purge air from the hose, then close the valve.
  • Initiating Charging: Open the low side valve on the manifold gauge to allow the refrigerant to flow into the system. Monitor the scales to ensure the correct amount of refrigerant is added.
  • Finishing the Charge: Once the specified weight of refrigerant has been charged, close the manifold gauge valves, and disconnect the hoses.

7. Final Checks and Start-up

  • Re-check for Leaks: Perform a final leak check to ensure system integrity.
  • Start-up the System: Restore power to the air conditioning unit and start it. Observe the operation for a few minutes to ensure it is functioning correctly.
  • Performance Check: Measure the temperature drop across the indoor unit to assess cooling performance, including suction line temperature and pressure, FCU return air and off-coil air temperatures, and superheat value.

8. Documentation and Cleanup

  • Record Keeping: Document the process, including the amount of refrigerant charged, and any repairs carried out.
  • Clean-up: Ensure all caps are replaced on service valves, tools are collected, and the work area is clean.
