GAS HEATER NO HOT WATER — CAUSES
Why Your Gas Heater Has No Hot Water
When your gas heater suddenly has no hot water, the cause is almost always one of four things: a problem with the gas or electrical supply reaching the unit, a worn or failed combustion component inside the unit, a corroded or leaking heat transfer component, or a failed sensor or control board. Most are wear-and-tear failures that develop over years of normal use in Singapore homes.
Gas or electrical supply failure
No gas pressure, tripped breaker, a faulty isolation valve, or a damaged communication cable between the control panel and the heater. The unit may be healthy, but it is not receiving what it needs to run — so the gas heater has no hot water until supply is restored.
Ignition or combustion failure
Worn-out ignitor, blocked or rusted burner, fan blower not spinning, or weak flame. The heater tries to fire but cannot sustain combustion. You will often hear clicking or see a brief flame before the gas heater reverts to no hot water.
Heat transfer failure
Corroded or scaled heat exchanger, internal piping leak, or rust damage from years of use. Gas burns correctly inside the unit, but heat is not transferred to the water — so the burner runs while the gas heater still produces no hot water at the tap.
Sensor or control board failure
Temperature sensor fault, overheating cut-out triggered, or a burnt or melted PCB. The heater shuts itself down to prevent damage. Even when every other component is healthy, a failed sensor or board will leave the gas heater with no hot water until it is replaced.

Gas Water Heater No Hot Water – FAQ
Learn the common reasons why a gas water heater may stop producing hot water, possible warning signs to look out for, and when inspection, repair, or replacement may be necessary.
Why is my gas water heater not heating?
A gas water heater may stop heating due to power supply failure, no gas supply, ignition problems, faulty sensors, PCB failure, water flow issues, or internal component damage.
Why is there water flow but no hot water?
This may happen when the heater cannot ignite properly, the gas supply is interrupted, or heating components inside the unit are no longer functioning correctly.
Can low water pressure cause the heater not to heat?
Yes. Some gas heaters require minimum water flow before ignition can occur. Low pressure or blocked filters may prevent the heater from activating properly.
Why does my gas heater click but not heat?
Repeated clicking without heating may indicate ignition failure, gas valve problems, ignitor faults, or unstable gas supply conditions.
Can a faulty PCB stop the gas heater from heating?
Yes. A damaged PCB may affect ignition, flame detection, temperature control, communication, or overall heater operation.
What happens if the gas supply is turned off?
The heater will not be able to ignite or produce hot water. Gas supply interruptions, closed gas valves, or meter-related issues can prevent normal operation.
Can an old gas heater stop heating suddenly?
Yes. Older heaters may develop worn components, sensor failure, corrosion, unstable ignition, or internal damage after years of continuous use.
Who should inspect a gas water heater that is not heating?
Gas heater inspections should be carried out by trained technicians under Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) supervision to ensure safe diagnosis and proper testing.
