Gas Water Heater with Smoke at Inz Residences– Citygas Supply: Replacement to Rinnai REU-2024W-RS

📍Inz Residences, Choa Chu Kang

The homeowner at INZ Residences contacted us after noticing smoke coming from their Gas water heater during operation. This raised immediate safety concerns, as smoke from a gas heater is often a sign of internal overheating or component failure, especially in older units used in condominium settings.

During our on-site assessment, our technicians found that the heater was no longer operating safely and could not be restored through repair. Continuing to use the unit posed a potential risk to the household. To resolve the issue safely and in compliance with gas safety requirements, we advised a full heater replacement instead of attempting further repairs.

Project Overview

The homeowner at INZ Residences reached out after noticing smoke coming from their Gas water heater while it was in use. This immediately raised concern, as smoke is not normal and often points to overheating or internal damage, particularly in older gas heaters commonly found in condominiums.

To ensure safety, an on-site assessment was arranged to check the condition of the heater and determine whether it could continue to be used safely.

Why this replacement is needed?

During inspection, our technicians found that the heater had internal heat-related damage and was no longer operating safely. The source of the smoke indicated that key components inside the unit were already compromised.

In situations like this, repairing individual parts would not resolve the underlying issue and could still leave the heater unsafe. Continued use could increase the risk of further overheating, smoke recurrence, or other safety problems.

How to check for Gas Water Heater with Smoke related issues?

Smoke-related issues must be checked by a Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) or someone under their supervision.

  1. 1

    Stop Using the Heater Immediately

If you see smoke, smell something burnt, or notice haze near the heater:

    • Turn off the heater
    • Do not try to restart it

Smoke is a sign of overheating or internal failure.

  2. 2

Check Where the Smoke Is Coming From

    Without opening the heater:

    • Burnt smell during operation
    • Smoke when hot water is turned on

These usually point to internal components overheating or burning.

  3. 3

Check the Display or Error Code

Look at the screen or controller:

    • Error codes appearing (or no display at all)
    • Heater shutting down by itself

Automatic gas heater shutdown often happens when the heater detects unsafe conditions.

  4. 4

Look for Visible Signs Outside the Heater

Do a quick visual check around the unit:

    • Rust, water stains, or corrosion
    • Signs of water leakage

These can worsen overheating and lead to smoke.

  5. ⚠️ Important: ❌ Do not open the heater. ❌ Do not touch gas connections

Full Gas Heater Replacement

During our on-site assessment, we found that the heater was no longer operating safely. Internal parts showed signs of heat damage, and continued use could pose risks such as further overheating, gas-related issues, or sudden system failure.

For safety and peace of mind, a full heater replacement was recommended. Replacing the unit ensures proper combustion, stable operation, and eliminates the risk of smoke or overheating recurring.

Safe Dismantling Of Existing Gas Heater

Once the Gas water heater was confirmed to be faulty, our team carried out safe dismantling of the existing unit to prevent further risk to the household.

The old heater was carefully taken down without damaging surrounding piping, valves, or wall finishes. Any worn or affected components identified during dismantling were addressed to ensure the site was left in a safe and stable condition.

Compliant Installation & Testing

The heater was installed in line with Singapore gas regulations. Once installed, we made sure:

  • All gas joints were tight and safe

  • The fan and exhaust were functioning properly

  • The heater could start and heat water consistently

What's the cost to repair a gas heater with smoke related issues?

When a Gas water heater produces smoke or a burnt smell, the cost cannot be determined upfront. Smoke usually points to internal overheating or damaged components, and the exact issue can only be confirmed through a site assessment.

During the on-site check, the technician will assess:

  • Source of the smoke and burnt smell

  • Condition of internal components

  • Signs of overheating, corrosion, or water leakage

  • Overall safety and reliability of the heater

Based on these findings, we will advise whether:

  • Repair is possible and safe, or

  • Full heater replacement is the more suitable option

City Gas Heater With Smoke at Inz Residences Gas Supply Regulations 21

Gas Supply Regulations 21

Under Gas Supply Regulations 21, any gas heater work — whether installation, repair, or replacement — must be properly checked to make sure it is safe and not leaking gas before it can be used.

To do this, our team carries out a Final Pressure Test. This test checks that all gas pipes and connections are sealed tightly and working safely. The gas system is pressurised and monitored for a few minutes to ensure the pressure stays stable.

If the pressure does not drop, it confirms there are no gas leaks and the system is safe to operate. Once the test is completed successfully, a Gas Test Certificate is issued and signed by our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) to confirm the installation meets Singapore’s gas safety requirements.

Conclusion:

The smoke issue at Inz Residences was a clear warning that the Gas water heater was no longer safe to operate. The signs observed during assessment pointed to serious internal heat damage, making the unit unreliable and unsuitable for continued use.

Rather than risk further faults or safety concerns, replacing the heater was the most sensible option. With the new unit installed and properly tested, the household now has a stable hot water supply and the assurance that the system meets current gas safety requirements.
