Project Overview

At Waterfront Key, Bedok Reservoir, the homeowner engaged our team after experiencing repeated E8 error code alerts on their Gas water heater. The fault caused unstable operation and frequent system shutdowns, resulting in unreliable hot water supply.

Why this replacement is needed?

In the Waterfront Key case, the gas water heater replacement was necessary due to a persistent E8 error code, which was traced to a faulty internal circulation pump. This component is critical for maintaining proper water flow within the heater during operation.

Over time, the pump had deteriorated due to age, heat exposure, and prolonged daily use, causing insufficient circulation. As a result, the heater repeatedly entered safety shutdown mode to prevent further damage, leading to unstable performance and frequent loss of hot water.

Site-Findings of Gas Water Heater Not Working

City Gas Heater Waterfront Key E8 Error Code

E8 Error Code:

It indicates a circulation pump fault in the gas water heater, where improper water flow is detected. To protect the system, the heater automatically shuts down, resulting in unstable operation or a complete loss of hot water if the issue persists.

City Gas Heater Waterfront Key E8 Error Code Gas Leak Above 1000ppm

Gas Leak Above 1000ppm:

There is a dangerously high level of gas in the air, far beyond what is considered safe.

At this concentration, gas can ignite easily, cause headaches, dizziness, and pose a serious fire or explosion risk.

City Gas Heater Waterfront Key E8 Error Code - Heat Exchanger Leaking

Heat Exchanger Leaking:

A heat exchanger leak means the internal part that heats the water has developed cracks or corrosion, allowing water to leak where it shouldn’t.

City Gas Heater Waterfront Key E8 Error Code Ignitor Rusty

Ignitor Rusty:

A rusty ignitor means the part that creates the spark to light the gas has corroded over time, usually due to moisture and heat exposure.

Due to this, it may cause the heater to struggle to start, shut down unexpectedly, or stop working altogether, resulting in no hot water.

How to check for Gas Water Heater with E8 error code?

Follow these simple checks to confirm an E8 fault. If it keeps returning after a reset, arrange a licensed inspection.

  1. 1

Check the display or control panel

Look at the heater screen or controller. If E8 error code is displayed, the system has detected abnormal water circulation and entered safety protection mode.

    Common Signs:
E8 error code shown Heater shuts down shortly after starting Display remains on but heater does not run
  2. 2

    Confirm water supply and pressure

Ensure the incoming water supply is fully open. Low water pressure or restricted flow can cause the pump to operate abnormally and trigger an E8 fault.

    Check for:
Main water valve fully open No blocked filters or strainers Normal water pressure at other taps
  3. 3

    Test hot water flow

Turn on the hot water tap fully. If water flows but stays cold, the heater is not igniting or is shutting down during operation.

    Typical symptoms:
Water flows but stays cold Heater cuts off after ignition Error returns repeatedly
  4. 4

Listen for pump and fan operation

When the tap is turned on, you should hear the fan and internal pump running smoothly. Unusual noise, weak operation, or silence often indicates a failing pump.

    Warning Signs:
No pump sound Loud or grinding noise Intermittent operation
  5. 5

Stop using if E8 error persists

If the E8 error code continues after basic checks, avoid repeated resets. A faulty pump can cause overheating and internal damage. Arrange a licensed gas inspection to assess repair or replacement.

    Important:
Heater not working Do not force restart Book inspection

Solutions provided by Homeone

Full Heater Replacement

A full heater replacement was carried out because the existing Gas water heater showed major internal faults that could not be reliably resolved with partial repairs. The E8 error code indicated a circulation pump failure, and further assessment suggested internal wear consistent with an ageing unit.

Continuing to repair individual components would only provide a short-term fix, with a high risk of repeated breakdowns and safety shutdowns. Given the heater’s condition, replacement was the safer and more practical long-term solution.

Safe Dismantling & Site Rectification

Once the Gas water heater was confirmed to be faulty, our team carried out safe dismantling of the existing unit to prevent further risk to the household.

The old heater was carefully taken down without damaging surrounding piping, valves, or wall finishes. Any worn or affected components identified during dismantling were addressed to ensure the site was left in a safe and stable condition.

Compliant Installation & Testing

The new heater was installed in accordance with Singapore Gas Supply Regulations 21, followed by:

  • Gas tightness and pressure testing

  • Proper fan blower and exhaust operation checks

  • Stable ignition and temperature performance verification

How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Gas Heater with E8 error code?

E8 error code is usually caused by a faulty circulation pump or abnormal water flow inside the heater. This issue can sometimes be repaired and is generally considered if the heater is relatively new or still within the first half of its average lifespan.

However, for heaters that have passed the midpoint of their lifespan, repair costs often come close to the cost of a new installation, with no assurance that other ageing components will not fail subsequently.

During our site assessment, we also identified additional internal issues, including water leakage within the unit and damage to internal control components, which are not repairable. For safety, long-term reliability, and overall cost-effectiveness, we recommended a full heater replacement, which the homeowner proceeded with.

City Gas Heater Waterfront Key E8 Error Code Final Pressure Testing 1

Gas Supply Regulations 21

Under Gas Supply Regulations 21, all gas appliances and their associated pipe connections must be properly inspected and tested to confirm they are safe, gas-tight, and fit for use after any installation, servicing, repair, or testing work.

To meet this requirement, our team conducts a Final Pressure Test as part of the safety verification process. In accordance with Singapore Standard SS 608:2024, the gas system is pressurised to 450 mm w.g. (45 mbar) and held for five minutes. Throughout the test duration, the manometer reading must remain stable, with no pressure drop beyond the permitted limit.

A stable reading confirms that the gas installation is free from leaks and safe for operation. Upon successful completion of the test, a Gas Test Certificate is issued and endorsed by our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW), certifying full compliance with Singapore’s gas safety regulations.

Conclusion:

For the unit at Waterfront Key, the E8 error code basically means the heater’s water pump is not working properly. Because of this, the heater keeps auto-shutting down to protect itself, which is why the hot water becomes on-and-off or completely stops.

This kind of problem happens quite often in older Gas heaters. Once the pump inside starts failing, the heater cannot run smoothly anymore, and forcing it to keep using may lead to bigger damage or safety issues.

In short, the E8 error is a clear sign the heater is already tired. It needs a proper check by a licensed gas technician to confirm whether it can still be fixed or if replacement is the safer and more long-term solution, so the homeowner can use hot water without worry again.
