Gas Water Heater E5 Error Code - Citygas Supply: Replacement to Macro MA-20WODP

📍North Park Residences, Yishun

The homeowner at North Park Residences experienced repeated hot water disruptions after their ageing Gas water heater began showing an E5 error code and operational instability. With safety and reliability being the homeowner’s priority, repair was deemed neither viable nor compliant, and a full Gas water heater replacement was carried out as the safest and most dependable solution.

Project Overview

At North Park Residences in Yishun, the homeowner contacted our team after their Gas heater began displaying an E5 error code, accompanied by unstable ignition and intermittent hot water supply. Upon inspection, our licensed gas service team found that prolonged exposure to heat and moisture had caused severe internal corrosion, with visible rust forming on gas components and pipe fittings.

Why this replacement is needed?

During our on-site assessment, we identified multiple critical internal failures.

We found a few issues like motherboard melted, internal pipe leaking, faulty fan blower which makes the heater beyond repair. The decision was made to replace it with a Macro MA-20WOD Gas Heater Powered by CityEnergy.

City Gas Heater North Park Residences E5 Error Code Control Panel

E5 Error Code: An internal safety or ignition fault detected by the heater, often linked to electronic failure, airflow issues, or overheating protection triggers.

City Gas Heater North Park Residences E5 Error Code: Faulty Fan Blower

Faulty Fan Blower: The fan blower is unable to provide proper airflow for combustion and exhaust, leading to unsafe operation, ignition failure, or automatic shutdown.

City Gas Heater North Park Residences E5 Error Code: Internal Pipe Leaking

Internal Pipe Leaking:
Corroded internal pipework within the sealed heater has developed leaks, a non-repairable condition that compromises safety and efficiency.

Motherboard Melted: Prolonged heat exposure has damaged the control board, affecting safety circuits and causing unstable heater performance or complete failure.

How to check for City Gas Water Heater showing E5 error code?

Follow these simple checks to confirm an E5 fault. If it keeps returning after a reset, arrange a licensed inspection.

  1. 1

    Check the display panel

Look at the heater screen/control panel. If it shows E5, the unit has detected an internal safety fault.

Display shows: E5 Hot water unstable
  2. 2

    Confirm the symptoms

Common signs: ignition fails, hot water cuts off mid-use, or the unit shuts down suddenly.

Ignition fails Auto shutdown Temperature swings
  3. 3

    Do a basic reset

Turn power off, wait 3–5 minutes, then turn it on again. If E5 returns, the fault is persistent.

Power OFF Wait 3–5 min Power ON
  4. 4

    Listen for the fan blower

When starting, the fan should run smoothly. If it doesn’t start, sounds weak, or is noisy, it may be faulty.

Fan not spinning Weak airflow Abnormal noise
  5. 5

    Stop using if E5 repeats

If E5 keeps appearing after reset, avoid repeated retries. Book a licensed inspection for safe diagnosis.

Solutions provided by Homeone

Full Heater Replacement

Due to the melted control motherboard, internal pipe leakage beyond repair, faulty fan blower, and extensive corrosion, repair was not a safe or viable option.

The ageing unit was fully removed and replaced with a new, approved Gas water heater suitable for the home’s usage demand.

Safe Dismantling & Site Rectification

The old heater was carefully dismantled, with all gas connections, exhaust pathway, and electrical bonding inspected for wear, leaks, or safety risks before installing the new unit.

Compliant Installation & Testing

The new heater was installed in accordance with Singapore Gas Supply Regulations 21, followed by:

  • Gas tightness and pressure testing

  • Proper fan blower and exhaust operation checks

  • Stable ignition and temperature performance verification

How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Gas Heater with E5 Error Code?

Because E5 is a safety-related fault, a licensed gas assessment is required to determine whether repair or replacement is the safest option.

Final Pressure Test at Kovan Melody SS 608 2024

Gas Supply Regulations 21

According to Gas Supply Regulations 21, any installation, maintenance, repair, or testing of a gas appliance and its connection to the gas installation must be checked to ensure it is safe for use and fully gas-tight.

Our team performs a Final Pressure Test to verify the system’s safety. Under the latest Singapore Standard SS 608:2024, the testing pressure is set at 4,50 mm w.g. (45 mbar) and maintained for five minutes. During this period, the manometer reading should remain stable with no drop exceeding 9 inches of water column.

If the pressure remains constant, it confirms that the gas installation is leak-free and safe for operation. Once testing is successfully completed, we issue a Gas Test Certificate signed by our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) to certify compliance with Singapore’s Gas Supply Regulations.

Conclusion:

At North Park Residences (Yishun), the ageing Gas water heater was no longer operating safely or reliably due to multiple internal failures. To restore consistent hot water and eliminate safety risks, the unit was fully replaced with a new Macro Gas Water Heater, installed and commissioned in full compliance with Singapore’s Gas Supply Regulations 21.

Prior to installation, the old heater was carefully dismantled, and all gas pipe joints, internal lines, exhaust pathway, and electrical bonding were thoroughly checked for wear, leaks, and corrosion. The new system was then pressure-tested, gas-tightness verified, and function-tested to ensure safe and stable operation.

By upgrading to a newer, compliant model, the homeowner can now enjoy reliable hot water with improved safety, free from the risks associated with gas leaks, electronic failure, or combustion issues.
