Gas Water Heater E3 Error Code at Centro Residences - Citygas Supply: Replacement to Macro MA-20WODP

📍Centro Residences, Ang Mo Kio

The homeowner at Centro Residences contacted us after experiencing repeated E3 error code alerts on their Gas water heater, resulting in intermittent hot water supply and sudden system shutdowns.

During our on-site assessment, the issue was identified as a heat exchanger–related fault. Over time, internal deterioration of the heat exchanger can affect heat transfer efficiency and trigger abnormal temperature readings. As a safety measure, the heater automatically shuts down to prevent further internal damage and potential hazards — a common scenario in ageing Gas heater units.

Project Overview

At Centro Residences, the homeowner reached out to us after their Gas water heater began displaying recurring E3 error codes, resulting in unstable hot water supply and sudden system shutdowns.

Our on-site inspection confirmed that the issue stemmed from compromised internal water flow regulation, a common problem in older gas heater units. When proper circulation cannot be maintained, the heater automatically shuts down as a safety measure, signalling that the system has reached a point where reliable operation can no longer be assured.

Why this replacement is needed?

The replacement was necessary because the repeated E3 error codes indicated a persistent internal water flow issue that could not be reliably resolved through repair. As the heater had aged, key internal components responsible for circulation and flow regulation had deteriorated, causing frequent safety shutdowns and unstable performance.

How to check for Gas Water Heater with E3 error code?

The E3 error code indicates a heat exchanger–related fault. This is a critical internal issue and often linked to ageing or internal deterioration.

  1. 1

    Confirm the error code

Look at the heater screen or controller. If E3 error code is displayed, the system has detected an abnormal heat exchanger condition and entered safety protection mode.

    Look out for:
E3 error code shown Heater shuts down shortly after starting
  2. 2

    Observe heater behaviour

Turn on the hot water tap and observe how the heater behaves during operation. A heat exchanger fault will usually cause unstable heating or sudden shutdown.

    Check for:
Heater ignites but stops after a short time Hot water temperature fluctuates
  3. 3

    Look for external warning signs

Although the heat exchanger is an internal component, there are external signs that may indicate internal deterioration.

    Typical Symptoms:
Water dripping or moisture below the heater Rust marks or corrosion on the casings
  4. 4

    Understand what E3 usually means

This error code indicates an internal heat exchanger problem that affects heating stability and safety.

    What it indicates:
Internal heat exchanger corrosion or leakage Abnormal temperature detection due to a damaged exchanger
  5. 5

Do not continue using the heater

Continuing to operate the heater after an E3 error may cause further internal damage and safety risks.

    Why it matters?
Continued operation may worsen internal damage Professional inspection is required for safety

Solutions provided by Homeone

Full Heater Replacement

A full heater replacement was carried out because the existing Gas water heater showed major internal faults that could not be reliably resolved with partial repairs. The E3 error code indicated a circulation pump failure, and further assessment suggested internal wear consistent with an ageing unit.

Safe Dismantling & Site Rectification

When an E3 error is confirmed, safe dismantling is required to prevent further risk during inspection or replacement.

What is done:

  • Gas supply is properly isolated before any work

  • Water inlet is shut off and system pressure is released

  • Heater is safely dismantled to avoid gas or water leakage

Compliant Installation & Testing

The new heater was installed in accordance with Singapore Gas Supply Regulations 21, followed by:

  • Gas tightness and pressure testing

  • Proper fan blower and exhaust operation checks

  • Stable ignition and temperature performance verification

How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Gas Heater with E3 error code?

The E3 error code indicates a heat exchanger–related fault, which is a major internal component of the heater. In most cases, we do not recommend repair for E3 errors.

City Gas Heater E3 Error Code at Centro Residences - Final Pressure Test

Gas Supply Regulations 21

Under Gas Supply Regulations 21, all gas appliances and their associated pipe connections must be properly inspected and tested to confirm they are safe, gas-tight, and fit for use after any installation, servicing, repair, or testing work.

To meet this requirement, our team conducts a Final Pressure Test as part of the safety verification process. In accordance with Singapore Standard SS 608:2024, the gas system is pressurised to 450 mm w.g. (45 mbar) and held for five minutes. Throughout the test duration, the manometer reading must remain stable, with no pressure drop beyond the permitted limit.

A stable reading confirms that the gas installation is free from leaks and safe for operation. Upon successful completion of the test, a Gas Test Certificate is issued and endorsed by our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW), certifying full compliance with Singapore’s gas safety regulations.

Conclusion:

At Centro Residences, the E3 error code was confirmed to be caused by an internal heat exchanger fault. Given the age of the heater and the safety risks associated with heat exchanger deterioration, repair was not recommended.

To ensure long-term safety, reliability, and compliance, the homeowner proceeded with a full gas water heater replacement. The new installation restores stable hot water performance while eliminating the risk of recurring internal failures, providing peace of mind for daily use in the home.
