Gas Heater Water E1 Error Code at Waterfront Waves - Citygas Supply: Replacement to Rinnai REU-2024WF-RS

📍Waterfront Waves, Bedok Reservoir

The E1 error code usually means the gas heater is unable to ignite properly. When the heater tries to start but does not detect a stable flame, the safety system steps in and shuts the unit down to prevent unsafe operation.

This can be caused by ageing internal components, ignition parts that are no longer working reliably, or airflow and heat transfer issues that affect flame stability. As a result, the heater may fail to start, stop suddenly, or produce inconsistent hot water.

Because E1 is a ignition fault, a proper on-site assessment by a licensed gas technician is required to identify the exact cause and determine whether repair or replacement is the safer solution.

Project Overview

The homeowner at Waterfront Waves contacted us after experiencing repeated E1 error codes on their Gas water heater. This caused the heater to fail to start properly, resulting in intermittent hot water and unexpected system shutdowns.

Despite having normal gas supply, the heater could not maintain stable operation. These symptoms pointed to an internal ignition-related fault, rather than a simple user or gas supply issue. An on-site assessment was arranged to properly diagnose the problem and ensure safety.

Why this replacement is needed?

During inspection, the heater was found to have age-related internal deterioration affecting its ignition and heat transfer process. When the heater attempted to start, it could not achieve stable ignition, triggering the safety system to shut the unit down.

This type of fault is common in older City Gas heaters and cannot be resolved reliably with minor repairs. Continuing to use the unit posed risks such as:

  • Repeated failure to start

  • Sudden shutdowns during use

  • Reduced safety and reliability

How to check for Gas Water Heater with E1 error code?

The E1 error code is a safety fault and must be checked by a Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW).

  1. 1

Check if the Heater Can Start

Turn on the hot water tap fully.

    • Heater tries to start but shuts off
    • Heater does not start at all
    • E1 error appears on the display

This usually means the heater cannot ignite properly.

  2. 2

    Check Gas Supply

    Make sure gas is available.

    • Check if your gas stove is working
    • Ensure the gas valve is fully open

If gas supply is normal, the issue is likely inside the heater.

  3. 3

    Reset the Heater (Once Only)

    • Switch off the power to the heater
    • Wait about 30 seconds
    • Switch it back on and try again

If the E1 error comes back, do not keep resetting.

  4. 4

    Listen for Ignition Sounds

Stand near the heater when turning on hot water.

    • No clicking sound → ignition not starting
    • Clicking but shuts down → ignition not stable

Both are common with E1 error code.

  5. 5

Look for Signs of Age or Damage

Without opening the heater, check outside:

    • Rust around the casing or pipes
    • Heater is old and has had repeated faults

These often point to internal ignition-related problems.

⚠️ Important: Do not open the heater or touch gas parts.

Full Heater Replacement

The E1 error code indicates a serious ignition-related safety fault within the City Gas water heater. During assessment, the heater was found unable to start reliably, even with normal gas supply.

For safety reasons, partial repairs are not recommended. Continued use may lead to repeated shutdowns, unstable operation, or potential gas-related risks. A full heater replacement ensures stable ignition, consistent hot water supply, and full compliance with current gas safety requirements.

Safe Dismantling & Site Rectification

Once an E1 error is confirmed, the heater must be safely shut down and dismantled before any further inspection or replacement work can be carried out.

What is done:

  • Gas supply is fully turned off and secured

  • Water supply is shut off and pressure is released

  • The heater is carefully dismantled to prevent gas or water leaks

Compliant Installation & Testing

The new City Gas heater was installed in line with Singapore Gas Supply Regulations 21. After installation, the following safety checks were carried out:

  • Checked all gas connections to make sure there are no gas leaks

  • Tested the fan blower and exhaust to ensure proper airflow

  • Confirmed the heater starts properly and heats water steadily

How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Gas Heater with E1 error code?

The E1 error code indicates a heat exchanger–related fault, which is a major internal component of the heater. In most cases, we do not recommend repair for E1 errors.

City Gas Heater E1 Error Code at Waterfront Waves - Final Pressure Test

Gas Supply Regulations 21

Under Gas Supply Regulations 21, all gas appliances and their associated pipe connections must be properly inspected and tested to confirm they are safe, gas-tight, and fit for use after any installation, servicing, repair, or testing work.

To meet this requirement, our team conducts a Final Pressure Test as part of the safety verification process. In accordance with Singapore Standard SS 608:2024, the gas system is pressurised to 450 mm w.g. (45 mbar) and held for five minutes. Throughout the test duration, the manometer reading must remain stable, with no pressure drop beyond the permitted limit.

A stable reading confirms that the gas installation is free from leaks and safe for operation. Upon successful completion of the test, a Gas Test Certificate is issued and endorsed by our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW), certifying full compliance with Singapore’s gas safety regulations.

Conclusion:

The repeated E1 error code at Waterfront Waves was a clear sign that the Gas water heater could no longer start and run safely. Although gas supply was normal, the heater failed to ignite consistently and kept shutting down as a safety measure.

After on-site checks, it was evident that the issue was internal and related to ageing components. Repair was not a reliable or safe option, as the heater could continue to fail or stop suddenly during use. For the safety of the household and to restore a stable hot water supply, a full heater replacement was the most suitable solution.

With the new heater installed and properly tested, the homeowner can now enjoy reliable hot water with peace of mind, knowing the system meets current Singapore gas safety requirements.
