Gas Water Heater Do Not Ignite at The Sound - Citygas Supply: Replacement to Macro MA-20WODP

📍The Sound, East Coast

The homeowner at The Sound reported that their Gas water heater failed to ignite, resulting in a complete loss of hot water. Initial checks showed that the unit was no longer responding during ignition, a common issue seen in ageing or internally failed gas heaters within condominium installations.

Upon site assessment, our technicians confirmed that the heater could not be safely restored through repair. To resolve the issue reliably and in line with safety regulations, we recommended a full replacement rather than trying to repair the unit.

Project Overview

The homeowner at The Sound contacted us after their Gas water heater failed to ignite, leaving the household without hot water. The heater showed no successful ignition response despite normal gas supply, indicating an internal fault rather than a simple operational issue.

During the on-site assessment, we carried out checks on the gas supply, ignition sequence, and overall appliance condition. Based on the findings, the heater was assessed to be unsafe and unreliable for continued use.

Why this replacement is needed?

The replacement was necessary due to a persistent ignition failure, which could not be resolved through repair without compromising safety. In many cases, ignition-related faults in older gas heaters are linked to internal component wear or deterioration that is not cost-effective or advisable to fix.

Gas Heater Do Not Ignite (Summary)

  • Rusty gas valve – Corrosion can cause the valve to malfunction, restrict gas flow, or fail to open and close properly, leading to ignition failure.

  • Rusty gas union – A corroded union weakens the gas joint and increases the risk of gas leakage, especially when disturbed during servicing.

  • Heat Exchanger shows signs of excessive leaking and is badly corroded.

  • Overall condition: Beyond repair, requires replacement.

How to check for Gas Water Heater No Ignition?

Follow these simple checks if you might be having issue with Citygas water heater having no ignition.
If you are still unsure, it is best to arrange a licensed inspection.

  1. 1

Check the display or control panel

Look at the heater screen or controller. If the screen is blank or the heater does not respond, the unit may not be getting power or has an internal fault.

    Common Signs:
No display or lights Display on but heater does not start
  2. 2

    Check gas supply

Make sure gas is reaching the heater.

    Check for:
Ensure the gas valve is fully open Look for rust or corrosion on the gas valve
  3. 3

    Listen for ignition sound

After switching on the gas heater, there will be a ignition sound like "tickkk". If no such sound, means the ignition part is faulty.

    What to look out for:
No sound after switching on gas heater
  4. ⚠️ Important: Do not open the heater or touch gas parts. A Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) or technician that is under their supervision shall inspect the city gas heater.

Full Gas Heater Replacement

For this case at The Sound, a full City Gas heater replacement was carried out after our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) identified severe corrosion at the gas valve and gas union.

These gas parts are critical for safe gas delivery and ignition. Once rust is present, continued operation or partial repair is not advisable due to the risk of unreliable ignition and compromised gas tightness.

Safe Dismantling Of Existing Gas Heater

Once the Gas water heater was confirmed to be faulty, our team carried out safe dismantling of the existing unit to prevent further risk to the household.

The old heater was carefully taken down without damaging surrounding piping, valves, or wall finishes. Any worn or affected components identified during dismantling were addressed to ensure the site was left in a safe and stable condition.

Compliant Installation & Testing

Installation was carried out in line with Singapore Gas Supply Regulations 21, followed by:

  • Gas leak and pressure testing

  • Fan and exhaust system checks

  • Ignition and hot water temperature verification

What's the cost to repair a Gas Heater with Ignition issues?

The actual cost cannot be confirmed upfront because ignition problems can be caused by different issues.

To understand the problem properly, a site assessment is required.

During the assessment, we check:

  • Gas supply and gas valve condition

  • Ignition system and safety sensors

  • Signs of rust, corrosion, or water damage

  • Overall heater condition and safety compliance

Only after inspecting the heater on site can we:

  • Identify the real cause of the ignition issue

  • Advise whether repair or replacement is more suitable

  • Provide a clear and accurate quotation

City Gas Heater Do Not Ignite at The Sound - Final Pressure Test

Gas Supply Regulations 21

Under Gas Supply Regulations 21, any gas heater work — whether installation, repair, or replacement — must be properly checked to make sure it is safe and not leaking gas before it can be used.

To do this, our team carries out a Final Pressure Test. This test checks that all gas pipes and connections are sealed tightly and working safely. The gas system is pressurised and monitored for a few minutes to ensure the pressure stays stable.

If the pressure does not drop, it confirms there are no gas leaks and the system is safe to operate. Once the test is completed successfully, a Gas Test Certificate is issued and signed by our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW) to confirm the installation meets Singapore’s gas safety requirements.

Conclusion:

Following a thorough on-site assessment, the Gas water heater at The Sound was confirmed to have an internal ignition fault that could not be resolved through simple adjustments or minor repairs. Despite normal gas supply, the heater failed to ignite reliably, indicating underlying safety and performance issues.

For safety reasons and long-term reliability, the unit was assessed to be unsafe for continued use. Replacement was recommended as the most appropriate solution to restore consistent hot water supply while ensuring compliance with gas safety requirements and protecting the household from potential risks.
