Project Overview

The homeowner at D’Fresco engaged our team after their Gas water heater stopped working, causing repeated hot water disruptions. The unit showed signs of internal ignition failure and unstable operation, which are common issues in ageing Gas water heaters.

Why this replacement is needed?

It was determined that repair was neither a reliable nor compliant option. To address safety concerns and ensure long-term performance, a Gas water heater replacement was carried out.

The new installation restored consistent hot water supply, enhanced operational safety, and ensured full compliance with current gas installation standards, providing the homeowner with lasting peace of mind.

Site-Findings of Gas Water Heater Not Working

City Gas Heater at D'fresco Not Working - Heat Exchanger Leaking

Heat Exchanger Leaking:

When a heat exchanger is leaking, it indicates a critical internal failure of the gas water heater and is considered a serious safety and reliability issue.

City Gas Heater at D'fresco Not Working - Gas Leak Above 1000ppm

Gas Leak Above 1000ppm:

Readings above 1000 ppm mean gas is escaping faster than it can dissipate, creating a hazardous environment.

City Gas Heater at D'fresco Not Working - Burner Obstructed

Burner Obstructed:

Poor combustion can result in elevated CO levels, posing serious health hazards.

City Gas Heater at Dfresco Not Working - Common Issues Found

Gas Heater Not Working (Summary)

  • Gas Leak above 1000ppm is a serious and unsafe condition that indicates active gas leakage and requires immediate action.

  • Heat Exchanger shows signs of excessive leaking and is badly corroded.

  • Burner Obstructed indicates blockages prevent proper gas–air mixing, leading to weak flames, delayed ignition, or flame failure

  • Overall condition: Beyond repair, requires replacement.

How to check for Gas Water Heater Not working?

Follow these simple checks to confirm if your gas heater is not working.

  1. 1

Check the display or control panel

Look at the heater screen or controller. If there is no display, error code, or the panel is unresponsive, the heater may have shut down due to a safety fault.

No display Error code shown Panel unresponsive
  2. 2

    Confirm gas and power supply

Ensure the gas isolation valve is fully open and electrical power is supplied. Gas heaters require both gas and electricity to operate.

Gas valve ON Power supply present No tripped switch
  3. 3

    Test hot water flow

Turn on the hot water tap fully. If water flows but stays cold, the heater is not igniting or is shutting down during operation.

Water flows No heating Cuts off mid-use
  4. 4

Listen for ignition and fan blower

When the tap is turned on, the fan should start and ignition should occur. Silence, weak airflow, or abnormal noise indicates an internal fault.

No ignition sound Fan not running Unusual noise
  5. 5

Stop using if heater remains non-operational

If the heater still does not work after checks, avoid repeated resets. Continued operation may be unsafe. Arrange a licensed gas inspection.

Full Heater Replacement

Due to the burner being obstructed, a gas leak reading exceeding 1000 ppm, and a leaking heat exchanger, the Gas water heater is deemed unsafe and non-compliant for continued operation.

These combined faults indicate severe internal deterioration that cannot be rectified through repair. As a result, a full Gas water heater replacement is required to eliminate safety risks, restore reliable operation, and ensure compliance with current gas safety standards.

Safe Dismantling & Site Rectification

The existing heater was safely removed, with thorough checks carried out on the gas pipe connections, flue exhaust route, and electrical bonding to identify any signs of wear, leakage, or potential safety concerns prior to the installation of the new unit.

Compliant Installation & Testing

The new heater was installed in accordance with Singapore Gas Supply Regulations 21, followed by:

  • Gas tightness and pressure testing

  • Proper fan blower and exhaust operation checks

  • Stable ignition and temperature performance verification

How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Gas Heater that is not working?

The cost depends on the fault. Minor issues may only require a basic inspection, while internal or safety-related faults increase costs.

If serious defects such as gas leaks, burner obstruction, or a leaking heat exchanger are found, repair is not safe or compliant, and a full heater replacement is required. Final pricing is usually confirmed after an on-site licensed inspection.

City Gas Heater at Dfresco Not Working - Final Pressure Test

Gas Supply Regulations 21

Under Gas Supply Regulations 21, all gas appliances and their associated pipe connections must be properly inspected and tested to confirm they are safe, gas-tight, and fit for use after any installation, servicing, repair, or testing work.

To meet this requirement, our team conducts a Final Pressure Test as part of the safety verification process. In accordance with Singapore Standard SS 608:2024, the gas system is pressurised to 450 mm w.g. (45 mbar) and held for five minutes. Throughout the test duration, the manometer reading must remain stable, with no pressure drop beyond the permitted limit.

A stable reading confirms that the gas installation is free from leaks and safe for operation. Upon successful completion of the test, a Gas Test Certificate is issued and endorsed by our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW), certifying full compliance with Singapore’s gas safety regulations.

Conclusion:

The Gas water heater at D’Fresco was found to be no longer operating safely or reliably due to age-related deterioration and internal faults. The unit exhibited unstable performance, loss of hot water, and safety-related shutdowns, indicating that continued operation would pose potential risks and would not meet current gas safety requirements.

Following assessment, repair was deemed neither viable nor compliant for long-term use. A full replacement was therefore identified as the most appropriate and dependable solution to restore hot water supply, ensure operational safety, and achieve compliance with applicable gas installation standards. The replacement provides the homeowner with improved reliability, enhanced safety, and long-term peace of mind.
