💧 Non-Compliant Installation: Why This Was a Serious Issue!

These omissions created safety hazards and breached multiple PUB and national standards.

1. Missing PUB-Required Double Check Valve (Backflow Preventer)

The previous installation did not include a double check valve, which is mandatory under Singapore Standard SS 636.
Without it:

  • Contaminated water can backflow into the clean water supply

  • Public health risks increase significantly

  • The installation is non-compliant with PUB regulations

2. No Proper Drain Pipe Discharge

The heater had no safe discharge route for water released during normal operation or emergencies. This often results in:

  • Water damage to interiors

  • Mould growth

  • Electrical hazards

  • Increased risk of scalding

  • Voided manufacturer warranty due to non-compliance with PUB standards

This violates the Water Supply Regulations and the Sewerage and Drainage Act, which require all water service works to follow the relevant Singapore Standards.

3. No Electrical Bonding

The original heater lacked electrical bonding—an essential safety requirement for all storage water heaters in Singapore.
Failure to install proper bonding can cause:

  • Electric shock hazards

  • Fire risks from stray current

  • Non-compliance with electrical safety regulations
