Gas Water Heater E2 Error Code at Caspian - Citygas Supply: Replacement to Rinnai REU-2024W-RS

📍Caspian, Lakeside

The homeowner at Caspian contacted us after their Gas water heater began showing an E2 error code, along with unstable hot water performance. At times, the water became too hot, while at other times, the heater failed to heat at all.

An on-site assessment was arranged to identify the cause and ensure the system remained safe to use.

Project Overview

The homeowner at Caspian reached out after noticing repeated E2 error codes on their Gas water heater. Hot water became unreliable — sometimes the water was too hot, and other times there was no hot water at all.

Why this replacement is needed?

During inspection, the problem was traced to a faulty temperature sensor. This sensor plays a key role in controlling how hot the heater gets. When it fails, the heater can no longer regulate temperature properly.

In this case, the faulty sensor led to overheating over time, which caused:

  • Excessive heat buildup inside the heater

  • The heat exchanger to overheat and become burnt

  • Increased risk of further internal damage.

For these reasons, full heater replacement was recommended as the safest and most reliable solution. This ensures proper temperature control, stable hot water supply, and compliance with current Singapore gas safety requirements.

How to check for Gas Water Heater with E2 error code?

An E2 error is not just a sensor issue — if left unchecked, it can lead to overheating and serious internal damage.

  1. 1

    Check the Water Temperature

Turn on the hot water tap.

    • Water becomes too hot suddenly, or
    • Water is not heating up at all

This is a common sign of an E2 error, which is linked to temperature control issues.

  2. 2

    Check the Display Panel

Look at the heater screen or controller.

    • E2 error code appears
    • Heater shuts down on its own after starting

This shows the heater has detected an abnormal temperature condition.

  3. 3

    Reset Once Only

    • You may try a basic reset once.
    • Switch off the heater power
    • Wait about 30 seconds
    • Switch it back on and try again

If the e2 error comes back, do not keep resetting.

⚠️ Important: Do not open the heater or attempt repairs.

Safe Dismantling & Site Rectification

Once the E2 error is confirmed, the heater is safely switched off and taken down before any further checks or replacement work begins.

What is done:

  • Gas supply is fully turned off and secured

  • Water supply is shut off and any remaining pressure is released

  • The heater is carefully dismantled to avoid gas or water leakage

Full Heater Replacement

After assessment, it was clear that the City Gas water heater could no longer operate safely or reliably. The E2 error code, unstable water temperature, and water leakage pointed to serious internal problems rather than a simple part failure.

The faulty temperature sensor caused the heater to overheat over time, which led to damage inside the unit. As a result, key components such as the heat exchanger were overheated and burnt, and continued use could cause further breakdowns or safety risks.

Compliant Installation & Testing

The new City Gas heater was installed in line with Singapore Gas Supply Regulations 21. After installation, the following safety checks were carried out:

  • Checked all gas connections to make sure there are no gas leaks

  • Tested the fan blower and exhaust to ensure proper airflow

  • Confirmed the heater starts properly and heats water steadily

How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Gas Water Heater with E2 error code?

The E2 error code indicates a temperature sensor–related fault, which affects how the heater controls and regulates water temperature.

In most E2 cases, we do not recommend simple repairs, especially when overheating or water leakage has already occurred. A faulty sensor can cause the heater to run too hot or not heat properly at all, leading to damage to other internal components over time. For safety and reliability, full heater replacement is often the safer solution.

City Gas Heater E2 Error Code at Caspian - Gas Supply Regulations 21

Gas Supply Regulations 21

Under Gas Supply Regulations 21, all gas appliances and their associated pipe connections must be properly inspected and tested to confirm they are safe, gas-tight, and fit for use after any installation, servicing, repair, or testing work.

To meet this requirement, our team conducts a Final Pressure Test as part of the safety verification process. In accordance with Singapore Standard SS 608:2024, the gas system is pressurised to 450 mm w.g. (45 mbar) and held for five minutes. Throughout the test duration, the manometer reading must remain stable, with no pressure drop beyond the permitted limit.

A stable reading confirms that the gas installation is free from leaks and safe for operation. Upon successful completion of the test, a Gas Test Certificate is issued and endorsed by our Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW), certifying full compliance with Singapore’s gas safety regulations.

Conclusion:

The E2 error code at Caspian was a clear indication that the Gas water heater was no longer regulating temperature properly. The faulty temperature sensor led to overheating, unstable hot water output, and water leakage, all of which pointed to serious internal issues rather than a minor fault.

Over time, the overheating caused damage to critical internal components, including the heat exchanger, making the heater unsafe and unreliable for continued use. At this stage, repairing individual parts would not resolve the underlying problem and could lead to repeated failures or further safety risks.

For the safety of the household and to restore consistent hot water supply, full heater replacement was the most appropriate solution. With a new heater installed and properly tested, the system now operates safely, maintains stable temperature, and complies with Singapore’s gas safety requirements, giving the homeowner peace of mind.
