Gas Water Heater: What is the Pre-Heat Function in a Gas Water Heater?

Pre-heat warms the pipes in advance, so you get hot water faster with less waiting.

What is the Pre-Heat Function in a Gas Water Heater?

The purpose of the preheat function is to reduce hot water delivery time from 1 minute to 5 seconds. Gas heaters heat water instantly. However, in the morning, the water sitting in the hot water pipe is cold. When the user turns on the hot tap, it triggers the heater to heat the water and deliver it to the bathroom. The user needs to wait approximately 30 seconds to flush out the cold water before the heater provides hot water continuously.

Do I Need the Pre-Heat Function?

The pre-heat function is beneficial for houses with long piping systems, such as those in double-storey homes, landed properties, or penthouses, where the piping may be up to 80 metres long. It can reduce the waiting time for hot water by about 1 minute.

For a standard 2- to 3-room unit, the waiting time is only about 30 seconds, so the pre-heat function may not be necessary.
